About Lea Bridge
The name Lea Bridge came into English history in 1745 when the initial Lea Bridge was built out of timber. The road leading to it gathered the name, and officials placed a toll on the Clapton end of the road. Maintenance for the road was sustained by the earnings produced by the toll, and it also maintained the wooden bridge. However, it became quite clear that a wooden bridge would not survive the years of pounding it would have to endure. For this problem officials decided to remove the rotting wood and renovate, by constructing a new iron bridge in 1820.
