Shadwell Basin today is the most significant body of water that has survived from the historical London Docks. The remainder of the London Docks have been landfilled but Shadwell Basin has been retained. Today it is a maritime square of 2.8 hectares which is used for recreational purposes which includes sailing, canoeing and fishing. It is now surrounded on 3 sides by a most attractive waterside housing development which was designed by MacCormac, Jamieson, Prichard and Wright, who are Britain's leading architects. These residential buildings are four and five storeys in height with facades of alternating open arches and enclosed structures; these echo the scale of traditional 19th century dockside warehouses.
The whole of east London is undergoing massive regeneration and Shadwell is no exception to this. There is one fine example of using one of the old buildings to fit in with our modern day living and that is the Wapping Project. This is just 9 minutes walk from Shadwell and was the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station which was originally built in 1890 and used to power machinery using steam and later electricity. The unique space of The Wapping Project is now a thriving and vibrant centre for the arts. After closing as a pumping station in 1977, it emerged into a multi-purpose exhibition and performance space. This east London venue is so interesting, it features newly commissioned, ever-changing works by visual artists, choreographers, composers, writers, poets, designers and film makers but with all this it has still retained much of its original hydraulic equipment and machinery making a feature of its inheritance. There is a restaurant and bar in the Engine and Turbine Houses and you will also find the historic pub the Prospect of Whitby on the other side of the road.
If you are visiting Shadwell you will enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that surrounds the area but you will always be able to appreciate its history as you walk along the fascinating street of this east London area.
