There will be 250 shops together with restaurants, offices, a cinema, a new tube station ticket hall and ample parking, it is also rumoured that there may even be a casino. You can look out from the shopping centre and see the blocks of housing that will accommodate the 2012 athletes. One the project is completed, Stratford will have had an historic face lift and will have not only the Olympic Park but 3,000 homes situated to the north of the Athletes Village, a shopping centre of mega proportion, one million square feet of offices, the Aquatics Centre, The Velodrome and several hotels. The developers have treated the area as a blank canvas and very little of the original Stratford will be left, but with the improved employment situation in the area, with a minimum of 9,000 job being created as a result of this development Stratford and the surrounding areas of East London should rise to great heights and it will truly be an exciting place to live and visit.
Stratford was first recorded as Straetforda in 1067, the meaning of its name was 'ford on a Roman Road'. Historically Stratford was an agricultural settlement within the ancient parish of West Ham but with the introduction of the railway in 1839 the area became an industrial suburb. As a result of this change Stratford expanded and increased in population significantly and became the centre of administration for the Borough of West Ham in 1886.
The Stratford we see today is very different and the future looks bright as a result of all the new development.
