Wapping is within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, situated on the north bank of the River Thames and part of the Docklands area. If you walk along the High Street you will come to Wapping Pier Head, this was the former entry way to the London Docks. He was outspoken in respect of the 'poor law' which led to many of the poor inhabitants of Wapping suffer in the workhouses, and it was in his book 'Oliver Twist' that he gives a vivid description of one of the Wapping Workhouses.
Wapping was predominantly marshland until the 16th century when it was drained and as a result it became rich meadowland until the lands were acquired for the London Docks. By 1969 the Wapping docks were empty and all around re-development was in progress, this is when forward thinking entrepreneurs started to cash in on the development and conversion of warehouses into living accommodation.
