Edgware is approximately 10 miles northwest of Charing Cross and is a suburb of North London. The area is predominantly residential and retail.
Edgware is a saxon name meaning Ecgi’s Weir, Ecgi was a Saxon and weir refers to a pond where his people would catch fish. In 1894 the Edgware Parish was part of Hendon Rural District but this ended in 1931 when it then formed part of the Municipal Borough of Hendon until 1965.
Edgware is famous back in history for its association with the famous highwayman Dick Turpin. On the 4th February 1735 Edgware was the scene of one of his worst incidents. Five gang members, including Dick Turpin broke into a farmhouse of Earlsbury Farm which was owned at the time by Joseph Lawrence who was aged at least 70 years but despite his age the gang tortured him by setting him on fire while he was naked and while this was going on Turpin took the servant girl and raped her. Despite the romantic stories that surround Dick Turpin, in real life he was one of the most ruthless villains of his time.
There have been a number of famous residents in Edgware such as Max Bygraves, singer and actor, Shirley Eaton, actress and Barry Norman, television presenter and author to name just three and many.
