The name Archway is derived from the arch which was built between Highgate and Hornsey in 1896. Originally the plan was to build a tunnel for the Highgate bypass to join the Great North Road, this was so that it could avoid the very steep Highgate Hill Road and the narrow roads of Highgate village. This failed as the build continually collapsed, so a high multi arched road bridge was constructed. The first bridge was constructed in the early nineteenth century and this was designed by John Nash. In 1901 the original bridge was demolished and in 1897 the current bridge which is known locally as ‘Suicide Bridge’ was built.
Until recently Archway was not a specific area and it was referred to as Highgate, Upper Holloway or Islington. The term Archway became popular as a result of Londoners using it to refer to their local area by reference to the nearest Underground Station, Archway (Highgate).
The first cable car to be built in Europe ran the road from Archway to Highgate village and operated between 1884 and 1909.
Archway is also famous for the rumour that it was at Archway that Dick Whittington heard the Bow Bells ringing which was when he changed direction and returned back to London and became the Mayor of London. Outside Whittington hospital is a small statue of Whittington’s treasured Cat.
The Archway Tavern is a noted music venue and this was used for the photograph on the cover of The Kinks album called Muswell Hillbillies which was released in 1971.
There have been many notable residents in and around Archway such as Rod Stewart. When his father retired from the building trade he then opened a newsagent’s shop on the Archway Road, at that time Rod Stewart was in his early teens and the family lived over the shop.
