First recorded in the early 15th century Colney Hatch was originally a hamlet in Friern Barnet and it became well known in the mid-19th century following the building of the Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum or Friern Hospital. The hospital was in operation between 1851 and 1993 and was home to as many as 3,500 mental patients and was well known for having the longest corridor in Britian and it could take a visitor more than five hours to walk all the wards. In 1918 it was known as Colney Hatch |Mental Hospital and in 1937 it was renames Friern Mental Hospital and then the name changed again in 1959 to Friern Hospital. Some of the residents of the Asylum were John Duffy a British serial killer and rapist, Dorothy Lawrence who was a woman who dressed as a man to enable her to fight on the front lines of World War 1 and also Aaron Kosminski who was a Jack the Ripper suspect. The hospital eventually closed down in 1993 after a long period of decline. At that time the building was converted into luxury flats and was named Princess Park Manor.
