Friern Barnet was originally taken to be part of Barnet and most of Barnet was in Hertfordshire but by the thirteenth century the Middlesex part of Barnet was known a “Little Barnet” before becoming “Frerenbarnet” and then “Friern Barnet” as we know it today. The name Friern denotes “brotherhood” and it refers to its ownership by the Priory of the Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.
Until the nineteenth century Friern Barnet was a rural area but the opening of the Colney Hatch Hospital and of railway station around the year 1851 it fast began its development as an outer London suburb. Its postcode districts are N10, N11 and N12.
The housing in the area consists of late Victorian and early Edwardian properties together with larger houses from later periods and a large number of smaller semi-detached and terraced houses. The majority of the properties in the area are owner-occupied but recently many of the larger properties have been converted into flats and bedsits for rental purposes.
The area now known as Friern Village was once an area farmed by the Colney Hatch Hospital residents. This area is home to some modern housing developments and it now has a new public park named Friern Village Park.
Friern Barnet is today a leafy suburb with private gardens and trees and Friary Park. It includes the North Middlesex Golf Club and Coppetts Wood nature reserve which is a medium sized picturesque area with rare plants and wildlife including some types of small bat and Great Crested Newts.
