Highbury today was once part of the larger manor of Tolentone, mentioned in the Domesday Book. The owner at that time were Ranulf brother of Ilger and the area he owned included all of Islington, north and east of Canonbury and Holloway Road. After the decay of the old manor house a new manor house was built in 1271 and because it was on a hill it was call Highbury.
Alicia de Barrow was the owner of Highbury Manor and in 1271 she gave it to the Priory of St John of Jerusalem who were also known as the Knights Hospitallers. During the Peasants Revolt in 1381 Jack Straw led a mob of 20,000 rioters who took offence at the wealth of the Knights Hospitallers and they destroyed the manor house. The Lord Prior took refuge in the Tower of London but was later captured and beheaded on Tower Hill. As Jack Straw and some of his followers used what was left of the derelict Manor House as a base it became better known over the next 500 years as Jack Straw’s Castle. The Manor remained in the possession of the Knights of St John for a while but in 1540 Henry VIII confiscated it and the land then stayed crown property until Parliament started selling it off in the 17th century.
It is thought that a Roman garrison possibly used the Highbury Manor site as their summer camp as during the construction of the new Highbury House in 1781 a number of tiles were found which could have been Norman or Roman.
In 1794 Highbury consisted of the gated terraces of Highbury Terrace and Highbury Place, Highbury Hill House, Highbury Barn and Highbury House. Highbury Fields was saved from development in 1869 and Finsbury Park was created but the rest of the area was developed.
Until the 1870’s many large Italianate villas were built, this was mostly in the southern part of Highbury. After that the development went down market with tightly packed mostly terraced houses being built, the majority of which were in the north of Highbury.
During World War II Highbury was hit hard by V-1 flying bombs and after the war large-scale rebuilding took place in parts of Highbury to replace the bombed building and this also provided new municipal housing.
In 1913 Woolwich Arsenal Football Club moved to Highbury then dropping Woolwich from its name. Arsenal’s success made Highbury well known, although this was not a good outcome for nearby housing and in 2006 the club moved to a new stadium on the west side of Drayton Park in Holloway. The old stadium has now been converted into a housing complex with the two listed main stands being incorporated into apartments. The unlisted North Bank and Clock End stands have been demolished and entirely new buildings have been erected.
