Islington was originally named by the Saxons, Giseldone in the early 11th century, and then renamed Gislandune towards the end of the 11th century. The name later mutated to Isledon, which remained in use well into the 17th century when the modern form, Islington became prevalent. In medieval times, Islington was just one of many small manors located to the North of London, along with Bernersbury, Neweton Berewe or Hey-bury and Canonesbury formed from, Barnsbury, Highbury and Canonbury whose names were first recorded in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Several roads fringing the area including Essex Road were formally known as streets during the medieval period, possibly suggesting Roman origin. Unfortunately very little physical evidence remains to support the potential claims. The Great North Road, from Aldersgate was first used in the 14th century and linked up with a new turnpike (toll road) through to Highgate Hill. The road ran on the current line of modern Upper Street and included a toll gate at The Angel, which supposedly defined the extent of the village. The Back Road, the now modern Liverpool Road, was principally a drover’s road where cattle were rested prior to completing the final leg of their journey to Smithfield.
Islington develop as an expansive village along the original line of the Great North Road and bestowed the name of the modern borough. The district is delimited by Liverpool Road to the west and New North Road to the south-east. The northern most point is the area of Highbury. The main flowing North-South High Street, Upper Street, divides at Highbury Corner in to the Holloway Road to the West and St. Paul's Road to the East. The infamous area around The Angel tube station is at times considered a district in its own right, The Angel, Islington. The northern part of this area forms part of the Islington district, whilst the southern half is in the neighbouring area of Finsbury.
