Muswell Hill is believed to date from the 12th century and the name is believed to come from a natural spring or well (the “Mossy Well”). The well is said to have had miraculous properties as the story tells of a Scottish King who was cured of disease after drinking the water of the spring/well and during medieval times this area became a place of pilgrimage.
In the 18th century Muswell Hill was classed as a small village and consisted mainly of detached villas in large grounds. At the end of the 19th century Muswell Hill was being developed more densely changing the outlook from country houses to the contemporary London suburb it is today.
Most commercial development started in the early 20th century when the current street design was set out and elegant Edwardian retail parades were constructed. In the centre there was a music hall which sadly later was demolished and a supermarket was built on the site plus several churches of various denominations.
In the 1930’s the wonderful art deco Odeon Cinema was constructed and today remains as a Grade 11 listed building.
Today Muswell Hill comes under the London borough of Haringay and its postal district is N10. With its easy access to the centre of London it is a very popular area with visitors as well as a sought after residential area.
