West Green was developed as a small medieval village in the late 14th century, first recorded in 1393. Although as records show it had not grown by 1800, by 1840, it had more than doubled in size. Development increased during the 1860s, predominantly after the arrival of the Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway in 1878. By 1890 the urbanisation of the area was complete and West Green became part of suburbia, spoiling a once pretty village and creating an urban sprawl.
