Within Winchmore Hill is Grovelands Park which was originally a private estate but now part of this estate has been sold to the council and the other part remains with private owners. In 1565 the village was known as Wynsmorehyll, soon to become Winchmore Hill in 1586. Winchmore Hill has many historical building such as St.Pauls Church. The oldest pub in the area is thought to be the Green Dragon which is on Green Lanes and by 1752 The Green Dragon was established and at the time highwaymen were hanged close to where they were caught. It is thought one highwayman was caught and executed on the gallows erected outside the Green Dragon’s front entrance.
There are many buildings that were built between 1770 and 1839 which still remain today which includes some old terraced houses built around 1770 close to the Dog and Duck pub on Hoppers Road.
In 1907 an electric tramway was developed along Green Lanes from Palmers Green and this helped to further develop the area as well as the Great Northern Railway when they built a new line to run from Wood Green to Hertford through Palmers Green and Enfield.
Today Winchmore Hill could be described and an attractive residential area with lovely parks and walks surrounding it with easy access to all the attractions that the centre of London holds.
