London escortsIt has a densely populated residential area and its own underground station which is on the Piccadilly Line. This station was designed by Charles Holden, opening in 1932 it is a well-preserved example of his work. This station provides a service not only for the residents but for Wood Green Shopping City and the Haringey Council administrative complex.
The Earl of Dorset carried out a survey of the Hamlet of Wood Green in 1619 and this showed it consisted of ten houses with a few scattered farmhouses and 50 people living there. There is little change recorded during the next seventy years other than the population had increased to about 100 and Wood Green had gained a forge, general stores and its very own Inn called “The Three Jolly Butchers. During this time there was much cutting down of trees and the building of a few more houses.
The census of 1861 showed 565 houses and a population of 3,154. and up until 1902 it formed part of Tottenham for educational purposes but in this year its council elected its own Education Committee and in 1921the records showed it consisted of 50,716 houses which was a massive growth.
The price of land also had a substantial increase for example in 1851 a ten-acre field in Wood Green was sold for £75 an acre and in 1876 that same field was sold for building purposes for £800 an acre.
With Wood Greens rapid growth came dissatisfaction with the way it was being treated by Tottenham and this led to Wood Green having its own Local Board of Health in 1888, Sir Ralph Littler was its first Chairman. In 1894 Wood Green became an Urban District and in 1895 Passmore Edwards Hospital was established and by 1903 had been enlarged to 25 beds serving Wood Green, Hornsey and Southgate.
By 1894 after much development in both Tottenham and Wood Green the difference in the two was clear, Tottenham was the most populous of all of London’s outlying districts and was mainly populated by lower middle classes such as warehousemen and City Clerks whereas Wood Green had many well-to-do residents. It did consist of some terraced houses where the houses stood 40 to an acre these were the homes of the working-class railway workers.
Since 1888 Wood Green has seen a rapid growth in all directions and today we see a very different picture to the past.
