Colindale was formerly in the borough and parish of Hendon when the area was the dale between Mill Hill and The Burroughs. In the mid 20th century it included the part of Edgware Road situated between The Hyde and Burnt Oak. Colindale is named after a 16th Century family of the same name and until the 20th century there were no buildings except for a large house called Collindale Lodge, Collindale Farm and just a few scattered cottages. All of these properties were situated on Collindeep Lane which during medieval times had been one of the alternative routes out of London and you would travel via Hampstead, Golders Green and Hendon to the Edgware Road. By the end of the 16th century this route was rarely used as a main road and by the mid 19th century was called Ancient Street.
Colindale became very attractive to developers by the end of the 19th century as land prices were cheap at that time. By 1914 there was already housing between Colindale Avenue and Annesley Avenue, this was mostly to house the workers of the industries which had come to the area. After World War I more manufacturing companies came to Colindale such as Frigidaire which started in a wooden shack in Aerodrome Road employing just 11 people in 1923 and selling the first automatic household fridges in England. The reason why this and many other companies chose Colindale was that there was plenty of land available for expansion. When the tube railway reached Colindale, land prices increased significantly and companies such as Frigidaire decided to build a new manufacturing plant to the west and moved its entire operations there by 1946.
After the opening of the tube station the development of this London suburb was rapid and by 1939 the majority of the western side was semi-detached housing, this growth has gradually continued to present day.
