The name Gospel Oak is derived from an oak tree where parishioners used to gather to hear an annual gospel reading when the area was still rural. The local landowners when development began in the mid-19th century were Lords Mansfield, Lisburne and Southampton. At first the buildings in the area were two and three storey cottages, which made up the living accommodation for “navvies and quarrelsome shoemakers”. Later the area became solidly residential and far more respectable.
Gospel Oak today is very much a socially mixed area with a sizeable Jamaican, African and South American communities and more recently Eastern European. The ethnic cultures are well reflected in the many food stalls, restaurant and clothes shops in the area.
