Historically Hendon was a civil parish within the county of Middlesex and the manor is described in the Domesday Book (1087) by the name ‘Hendun’ which meant ‘at the highest hill’. The Hendon and District Archaeological Society have discovered evidence of a Roman settlement and a burial urn of a headless child was found in nearby Sunny Hill Park. A number of Roman artefacts have been found at Church End although nothing conclusive. The domesday Survey mentions a priest and a church building which was documented in 1157. The oldest present church is around 13th century and its 50ft tower built around 1450 was restored during the 18th century when the weathercock in the form of a “Lamb and Flag” which is the badge of St John was added. Strangely, however, the church itself is dedicated to St Mary and to this day local historians cannot fathom this.
The area of The Burroughs was a distinct hamlet until the 1890s and was known from 1316 to the 19th century as ‘the burrows’ which referred originally to the keeping of rabbit warrens. Sadly after the UK outbreak of myxomatosis during the 1950s, rabbits were smoked out of the area using steam engines.
Both the Great Northern Railways and The Midland Railway were built through Hendon in the 1860s and there was evidence of a number of problems during that time with wild horses feeding between the tracks.
Hendon became an urban district in 1894 and in 1932 the urban district became the Municipal Borough of Hendon although this was abolished in 1965 when the area became part of the London Borough of Barnet.
Hendon has a history in flying and Hendon Aerodrome is now the RAF museum, with the area closely associated with the famous aviator Claude Grahame-White. There is another part of the Aerodrome site which is the home of the Hendon Police College which is the training centre for the Metropolitan Police.
