Kensal Green is an area in the London Borough of Brent and is also referred to as Kensal Rise, this is a small area on the southern edge of the borough and also borders the boroughs of Westminster to the East. Its borders to the South are Kensington, Chelsea and Ladbroke Grove with its surrounding neighbourhoods which include Harlesden to the West, Willesden Green to the North, Brondesbury and Queens Park to the East.
Residents will differentiate between Kensal Green and Kensal Rise based on proximity to the local tube and train stations whereas non-residents will use the names interchangeably to denote the same neighbourhood.
There is a third area South of Harrow Road, around the area of Kensal Road and this is commonly referred to as Kensal Town.
The name Kensal Green was first mentioned in 1550 although the name ‘Kingisholt’ (‘The King’s Wood’) was recorded as early as 1253. The land in the surrounding areas was owned by All Souls’ College and the Countess of Richmond who was the mother of King Henry VII. The area between Kensal Green and Harlesden was mainly sheep farms. Gradually over the years the area has changed drastically from a small hamlet which lived around the activities on the Grand Junction Canal where barges with cargoes of iron, coal, waste paper and gravel were towed through Kensal Green, then a brick works was set up and the growth of the area began and by 1823 there were many cottages owned by local tradesmen and inhabited by the poor.
In the late 1800s large scale housing construction took place and by 1913 housing stretched all the way to Harlesden. By the turn of the century a large number of the houses were overcrowded and even as late as 1971 at least a quarter still lacked full amenities.
Today we see a completely different picture of Kensal Green. This change started in the mid to late 1980s when the neighbourhood’s fortunes changed, mainly due to the explosion in the London property market and the areas central location with its excellent transport links. A large number of young professional couples and families with young children as well as many artists and media sector employees have flocked to the area.
