Kentish Town Escorts

About Kentish Town

Kentish Town derived its name from ‘Kenditch’ which means ‘bed of a waterway’, the reason for this was that originally it was a settlement along the River Fleet which flowed through the area although today it runs underground.

The first records of Kentish Town were during the reign of King John around 1207 and its name then was kentisston. By 1456 a chapel of ease was built for the inhabitants as by then it was a thriving hamlet.

Modernisation arrived by the early 19th century and this was the cause of the area loosing much of its rural charm and the river fleet and the 18th century buildings mainly vanished although some small areas remained. Large amounts of land were purchased in order to build the railway and this can still be seen today. As Kentish Town Road was a major route from London heading northwards Kentish Town was a prime area for development. One of its most famous residents was Karl Marx who lived at 9 Grafton Terrace from around 1856.

In 1877 the area was very poor and mission work began to help support the inhabitants. At first the mission conducted their services outside but gradually as funding increased they managed to build a chapel, vicarage and a mission house and one mission house was Lyndhurst Hall and this stayed in community use for many years. Eventually it became very run-down and was taken over by the council and the hall was demolished in 2006.

The shopping area locally known as Kentish Town High Street is a mixture of national retail chains and independent shops. In 2005 the local Green Party carried out a survey and found that out of the 87 shops within the High Street 53 were still independently owned. There are also quite a number of ‘World Food’ shops opened in the area.

Kentish Town is also home to The Forum and well into the 1950’s it was one of Kentish Town’s most popular and comfortable cinemas but is now a very popular live music venue. It is also home to one of London’s most famous nudist public baths, namely Rio’s.
