Kingsbury is in the London Borough of Brent which is North West London and its postcode is NW9. The meaning of the name Kingsbury is simply “Kings Manor” and historically has been a small parish in the county of Middlesex and largely rural with only a few settlements.
Although it lies close to London its development was slow and it was not until after the 1st World War that real development started. During the war an aircraft industry was established in the part of Kingsbury close to Hendon aerodrome.
In 1924 the British Empire Exhibition was held in nearby Wembley and the road network was improved at that time to cater for this. The number of inhabited houses in the parish increased from just 140 in 1901 to 3,937 by 1931 then by 1951 this had risen greatly to 11,776, the percentage increase in population by 1951 was 796%.
In the past Kingsbury had been famous for being the location of the Vanden Plas specialist motor body works who were body makers for Bentley and later part of Austin, BMC and British Leyland, today the site is Kingsbury Trading Estate.
By 1894 Kingsbury was included in the urban district of Wembley but as Kingsbury only had three councillors on the urban district council to Wembley’s nine, the Kingsbury councillors felt that the needs of the area were not fairly served. In 1900 Kingsbury became a separate urban district with six councillors. Immediately the new council was involved in controversy and by 1906 it was clear that it had failed to make the grade or meet its financial commitments. Following an inquiry initiated by its ratepayers the council was increased to nine members but unfortunately personal difficulties continued between councillors for some years. In 1934 Kingsbury Urban District was abolished and once again merged into Wembley Urban District and finally became London Borough of Brent.
There have been a number of notable people residing in Kingsbury such as singer songwriters Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan who have both risen to fame as members of the successful pop group Sugababes and were both born and raised in Kingsbury and attended Kingsbury High School. The Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts attended Tylers Croft School and Jet Harris of The Shadows was born in Kingsbury.
Today Kingsbury is a quiet suburb, but despite this it has ample entertainment in the area, such as many different types of restaurants, clubs and pubs which would be the ideal place to meet with one of our outstanding
