St John’s Wood has taken its name from its history as it was originally part of the Great Middlesex Forest, this was before it was owned by the knights of St.John of Jerusalem. After the reformation the area of St John’s Wood became crown land and at that time it was still a rural area and continued to be so until the end of the seventeenth century. It was then that the area began to develop and by the nineteenth century many villa style homes had been built and it was far less crowded than the typical London terraces in the nearby areas.
Close by one of the worst slums in London was Lisson Grove and it was famously the home of Eliza Doolittle the character in George Bernard Shaws ‘Pygmalion. At that time the area was so bad that police would patrol only in pairs and the local women were described as the most violent and foul mouthed in London and many residents in that area lived in extreme poverty.
Today there is much to see in this beautiful area of London, St John’s wood is a very desirable area to live and has good transport links. The residential properties are both substantial and attractive but some can come with a price tag of between £10m to £25m although for those with more realistic budgets there are more affordable flats around Grove Hall Court, some in the region of £250,000.
St John’s Wood is famous for its Abbey Road, this is the thoroughfare located in the borough of Camden and the City of Westminster in London running northwest to southeast through St John’s Wood, close to the famous Lord’s Cricket Ground.
EMI’s Abbey Road Studios are located at the south-eastern end at 3 Abbey Road, St John’s Wood. This was where The Beatles and many other famous recording artists have recorded their music. The Beatles names their LP which was made in 1969 ‘Abbey Road’ and the album cover shows the four Beatles walking across the zebra crossing which was located just outside the studio entrance and as a result of this since 1970 that section of Abbey Road has been featured on the London tourism circuit. The council have to repaint the wall next to the crossing every three months in order to cover fans’ graffiti.
