Anerley never really existed as an independent entity but was known as a general area. Before the closure and relocation of The Crystal Palace Anerley was just an unoccupied part of Penge Common and did not truly develop until the 19th century. In 1827 the government stipulated that a 50ft wide, new road was to be established from Elmers End Road to what is now known as Church Road. A Scottish silk manufacturer, namely William Sanderson bought the former Penge Common in 1827 and built the very first house in the area and named it “Anerly”, this was a Scottish word meaning “solitary” or “only” and after that the road became known as Anerley Road which gave its name to the surrounding area.
In 1809 The Croydon Canal was opened and this passed through Anerley, sadly this canal was a financial failure and closed after only 27 years. The canal was purchased by the London and Croydon Railway Company and they used the former canal for the new railway line, remnants of this can still be found in Betts Park in Anerley and in Dacres Wood in Sydenham.
In 1841 Anerley Gardens was opened and this provided entertainment for the ever growing 19th century leisure industry and with the new industry of rail travel it had its own station and became a desirable social venue. There were regular dances, the Anerley Hotel was built and a boating lake was developed as well as the beautiful gardens. With the competition from the nearby Crystal Palace the Gardens had to eventually be closed in 1868.
Anerley suffered extensively during World War II, five V1 rockets landed in the area with a further 6 landing in Crystal Palace Park, altogether 23 bombs landed in the SE20 area. In 1944 a V1 rocket was being chased by a Spitfire and was eventually shot down falling in Anerley Park, two people were killed and there was extensive damage to the properties in the area.
Gradually over the years since the war Anerley has been re-built and is now a busy residential area close to central London.
