About Roehampton
Roehampton, originally a village, became popular as a residential area, mainly for the wealthy giving easy access to London. In 1710 Roehampton House was built and until as recently as 2008 was the administrative centre for Queen Mary’s Hospital, it is now as many historic London buildings are, being developed into private flats. In 1762 Parkstead House was built by the second Earl of Bessborough and until 1861 was the home of the famous socialite Caroline Lamb. There are many other 18th century summer villas of the rich and affluent of London, such as Parkstead (Manresa) House, Downshire House, Mount Clare and Grove House. There is a great deal of the old village of Roehampton still remaining which is dominated by large detached houses.Alton Estate in Roehampton is one of the largest public housing estates in the UK, this occupies an extensive stretch of land between the Roehampton Lane through-road and Richmond Park golf courses. The estate consists of low and high-rise modernist architecture such as Alton East built in 1958 in the subtle Scandinavian-influenced shape, Alton West was built in 1959. Placed within the essentially Georgian landscape are five ultra modern slab blocks: Binley, Dunbridge, Charcot, Denmead and Winchfield Houses. The Alton Estate has been used as a television and film location a number of times, the Thames Television film division, Euston Films used the estate to film the opening scenes of Sweeney 2 the 1978 sequel to the film Sweeney produced in 1977, also the first episode of Minder was set in the Alton Estate.
The Dover House Road Estate was created as a number of cottage estates which were inspired by the Garden City movement and the common characteristic of the cottage estates is picturesque Arts and Crafts influenced housing. The goal at the Dover House Estate was to create housing in groups so that they overlooked or had access to open space in order to give a feeling of intimacy and individuality, behind these houses three Allotments were provided, two of which still remain.
