Bayswater truly emerged in the 1800s known at that time as Tyburnia, today it is known as the Hyde Park Estate which is on the borders of Sussex Gardens, Westbourne Terrace and the Edgware Road. As the City could be accessed easily by carriage or Hackney Cab it soon became a very desirable place to live. Wealthy Business owners and the well-to-do moved to Tyburnia. The Tyburn Estate was named after the River Tyburn and it was originally believed that it would rival Belgravia as the most popular destination for the wealthy of London but it never did become as desirable as the area of SW1.
Bayswater has over the years attracted various international communities such as French, Arabic and Greek and the beautiful and ornate Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St.Sophia was built between 1877 and 1882 in Moscow Road. The Wedding of Crown Prince Pavlos, son of the deposed King Constantine of Greece was held at this Cathedral in 1995 with the support and blessings of the British Royal Family as well as many other royals from around the world.
