The area was once a popular country retreat due to good links to London and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries the population grew significantly.
By the early 19th century the fishing industry in and around Chiswick went into decline, this was due to the pollution of the river Thames caused by the increase in industry and the invention of the flush toilet, the river simply became useless as a spawning ground and the Locks upstream made the river impassable for migratory fish such as salmon.
Chiswick had two very well-known theatres, The Chiswick Empire (1912 to 1959) and The Q Theatre (1924 to 1959). The Chiswick Empire was a large theatre with 2,140 seats and was the stage for music hall, plays, opera, ballet and an annual Christmas pantomime whereas The Q Theatre was smaller but renowned for many of its plays going on to the West End stages. Today the Tabard Theatre which was built in 1985 is well known for its new writing and experimental work.
During the 19th century the population of Chiswick grew tenfold and the residential environment is a mixture of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian.
Today Chiswick High Road is a busy centre being located between the offices at the Golden Mile Great West Road and Hammersmith, the office developments and warehouse conversion to offices began back in the 1960’s, which has made Chiswick a desirable destination for growing businesses including a number of popular Hotels. Chiswick is also home to the Griffin Brewery which produces award winning ales.
