In the 12th century it was recorded that a settlement existed within a great forest which covered the area of west London. In 1599 a census listed 85 households in Ealing village, that census divulged the names, ages, relationships and occupations of the inhabitants.
The wealthy people of London seemed to consider Ealing a place to escape from the smoke and not too pleasant smells of early London town. Many of the more affluent Londoners took up permanent residence in Ealing as it was so close to London. Up until that time Ealing was open countryside where in previous centuries the area was mainly occupied by the farming community.
In the 1850’s travel and links to London via the Great Western Railway and two branches of the Grand Union Canal many villages grew into town and all these merged into uninterrupted residential areas. During this time of growth Ealing was called the “Queen of the Suburbs”.
The most notable changes to Ealing emerged gradually during the 19th century with the building of the Great Western Railway, part of which passed through the centre of Ealing. This resulted in the opening of a railway station in 1879 situated on the Broadway, known then as Haven Green. Over the next few decades Ealing was rebuilt. Gas mains and an electricity generating station were built to supply the numerous semi-detached houses which were designed for the rising middle-class residents.
Ealing has been well known for its film studios which are the oldest in the world. The BBC took over these studios in 1955 and many Ealing locations have appeared in television programmes such as Doctor Who and Monty Python’s Flying Circus as well as most recently films such as Notting Hill and The Importance of Being Earnest and the remake of the old classic film St Trinian’s.
