Marylebone was originally known as the manor of Tyburn, and was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as having a value of 52 shillings and a small population of no more than 50 people. The manor was then leased to a succession of tenants up until 1538 when Henry VIII turned the northern part of the manor into a Royal hunting park, that area today is the well-known Regent's Park. King James I then sold the remainder of the manor in 1611 for the tidy sum of £17,500. During the 18th century, tall and dignified Georgian houses began to appear and many of these were in Harley Street, Portland Place and Wimpole Street. As well as the large and stylish houses there were pockets of poverty stricken areas such as Bolsover Street and Clipstone Street, these areas were notorious for prostitution. The majority of these houses were rebuilt around the 1900's as blocks of mansion flats. Ossington Buildings which are off Moxon Street date back to 1889; these were model buildings for the working classes and replaced a collection of slum houses. During the mid to end of the 1800's was the time when doctors began to move into Harley Street and this trend was given additional impetus when the Medical Society of London moved into Chandos Street in 1872 and the Royal Society of Medicine moved into Wimpole Street in 1912. This was the beginning of the massive growth of Doctors, Hospitals and medical organisations in and around Harley Street; increasing from approximately 20 doctors in 1860 to 80 by 1900 and by 1914 the number was almost 200. Today this Estate continues to adapt successfully to the ever changing needs of London.
Marylebone High Street, historically was a thriving community high street with a number of independent greengrocers, shops and butchers and during the 1950's as were many High Streets in the UK it was very successful. However, Marylebone High Street went into gradual decline during the 60's, 70',80's, and by the early 90's a third of the shops were vacant or occupied by temporary charity shops and this was a fairly desperate commercial situation for the area. Today after many changes in the retail trade the area once again has come to life and there is no doubt that the Marylebone is a desirable place to live, some say that Marylebone is the most fashionable area in London.
