Paddington has been home to many notable people such as Robert Browning the famous Victorian poet who moved from No 1 Chichester Road to Beauchamp Lodge, 19 Warwick Crescent and he resided there from 1862 until 1887. Robert Baden-Powell was born in Paddington on 22nd February 1857; he was famous as the founder of the scouting movement and also the hero during the Second Boer War at the Siege of Mafeking.
St Mary’s Hospital in Praed Street has been the site of several medical accomplishments. C.R. Alder Wright synthesised heroin (diacetylmorphine) at St Mary’s in 1874 and Sir Alexander Fleming was the first to isolate penicillin 1928 which earned him the Nobel Prize and the hospital is home to the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum where Fleming’s laboratory can be seen as it would have been in 1928. There are displays and videos exploring the story of Fleming and explaining the discovery and development of penicillin. St.Mary’s is also the birthplace of Royal princes, William born 21st June 1982 and Henry (“Harry”) born 15th September 1984.
Paddington Station which was opened in 1847 and is the terminus for commuter services to the west of England, for example Slough, Maidenhead, Reading and Swindon as well as mainline services to Oxford, Bristol, Bath, Taunton, Exeter, Plymouth, Cornwall and south Wales, this also includes Cardiff, Bridgend and Swansea. The Heathrow Express also runs from Paddington Station and services Heathrow Airport. Within the station you will find two statues, one of Paddington Bear who is the main character in the children’s fictional stories about the bear’s adventures and a statue of the designer of the station Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
