About Soho

Until 1536 Soho was grazing farmland and then Henry VIII took the land as a royal park for the Palace of Whitehall. People believe that the name ‘Soho’ is derived from a rallying call for the Duke of Monmouth’s men at the Battle of Sedgemoor and it was only half a century after that battle that the name was actually given to an area of London. During the late 17th century the land was passed on to several different people until eventually in 1698 William III granted the Crown freehold of most of the area to William, Earl of Portland. The southern part of the land became the parish of St Anne Soho and this land during the 16th and 17th centuries was sold by the Crown in small parcels, part of this went to Robert Sidney, Earl of Leicester. Landowners such as the Earls of Leicester and Portland had good intentions to develop the land based on the grand scale of its neighbours, Bloomsbury, Mayfair and Marylebone, Soho never accomplished their goal to become a fashionable area for the rich and many immigrants settle in the area instead. The few aristocrats who had been living in Soho Square or Gerrard Street had all moved away by the mid 18th century and the area soon fell into neglect. By the mid 19th century any remaining respectable families had moved from the area and the prostitutes, small theatres and music halls had moved in.

During the 20th century many foreign nationals began to open cheap eating-houses and it soon became a place for intellectuals, writers and artists to eat and some say that the pubs in Soho were full every night with writers, poets and artists, all drunk and many of them it is said could never stay sober long enough to become famous in their chosen professions.

Today Soho is an area within the City of Westminster and is located in the West End of London. During most of the 20th century Soho had a reputation for sex shops, nightlife and the film industry but from the early 1980s the area began to change and today it is predominantly a fashionable area consisting of upmarket restaurants and media offices with just a small quota of sex industry venues in the west.
