The area that we know today as White city was once level arable farm fields right up until 1908. At that time it was used as home to the Franco-British Exhibition as well as the 1908 Summer Olympics. The site then hosted the Imperial International Exhibition in 1909 and then in 1910 the Japan-British Exhibition. The last two exhibitions to be held on the site were the Latin-British exhibition in 1912 and the Anglo-American exhibition in 1914. The exhibition pavilions were clad in striking white marble and this is where the areas name comes from, in the past it was known as the Great White City but today we know it as White City.
The White City Stadium, known as the Great Stadium was opened by King Edward VII in 1908 for the Olympics. Later the stadium was used for greyhound racing and also for short periods by Queens Park Rangers football club. In 1985 the stadium was demolished in order to accommodate the BBC White City building.
