Noel Park is a late-19th early 20th-century planned community consisting of 2,200 properties, designed by Rowland Plumbe and one of the earliest garden suburbs in the world. It was originally developed in the open countryside north of London’s metropolis in the River Moselle. It lies approximately half-way between the historic villages of Highgate and Tottenham.
Noel Park was one of four developments, skirting London and built by the Artizans, Labourers & General Dwellings Company.
Noel Park was intended to provide affordable housing for London’s working class families; all properties had a front and rear garden. The original plan was to develop a self-contained community close to the existing rail network thus allowing its residents to commute to work. In accordance with the principles of the Artizans Company's founder, William Austin, the estate did not allow public houses to be built within its boundaries, this still applies today.
Despite bomb damage perpetuated during World War II and the demolition works during the development of Wood Green Shopping City, in the seventies,
Noel Park as it stands today remains principally architecturally intact. In the early 1980’s, the vast majority of the area obtained Conservation Area and Article Four Direction status, in recognition of its importance in suburban and philanthropic housing and the part it played in the annals modern housing estate development.
