About Palmers Green

Palmers Green was once a tiny hamlet within the parish of Edmonton with a very small population. In the mid 17th century the village comprised of no more than a few isolated houses but by 1801it had grown to a village with 54 building which included two inns. In 1871 the railway line was opened, this was from Wood Green to Enfield and at that time a station was built in Aldermans Hill which served Palmers Green which was conveniently about half a mile away from the nearest dwellings.

It was about thirty years before any further development occurred as the local landowners were refusing to sell their large estates for any type of building.

In 1902 the area began to develop rapidly and the first large-scale developments were on the old park estate between Aldermans Hill and Fox Lane also Hazelwood Park Estate between Hedge Lane and Hazelwood Lane.

The area is now mostly residential with outstanding green areas and is situated north of Wood Green. Palmers Green is now very popular with families of varied ages due to the very large Victorian terraced houses with quite large gardens.

Today you will find its large parade of shops known as Palmers Green Shopping Centre very popular with both residents and visitors alike. It has restaurants, pubs, clothing shops, beauty salons and independently owned cafes. The fast paced Night Bus sequence in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was filmed on Palmers Green High Street, also The Fox Pub was featured, which is also the site of the Electric Mouse comedy venue.
