The name
Rickmansworth comes from the Saxon name "Ryckmer", the local magnate, and "worth" meaning farm or stockade. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is known as The Manor of Prichemaresworde.
The Coach and Horses in
Rickmansworth became memorable in 1722 when it is thought that it was purchased by Samuel Salter and was the early stages of the Salters Brewery. Some 40 years later the pub was integrated with the salter brewery buildings. The brewery remained a family business for the next 201 years and expanded by aquiring more public houses around the area. In the 19th century the grand canal built various branches around
Rickmansworth. One of them was for Salter brewery which was used to transport the beer to Uxbridge. The running of the brewery passed through different hands until it finally came to an end and sadly in 1972 the brewery buildings were sold off to make way for offices.
When Samual Salter II died, his will instructed that a supply of a free cask of ale was to be left in the brew house yard so that anyone passing by could help themselves. Three other Hertfordshire brewers also offered free ale casks. This remarkable generosity continued until the large crowds that gathered every day became too eager and hostile towards each other, and sadly in 1857 saw the end of the free ale.
Today the town has a public golf course called
Rickmansworth Golf Club, which is adjacent to the two courses that make up the private Moor Park Golf Club. The course supports
Rickmansworth Golf Club which has been in existence for a number of years.
The town has been used in a number of films, including Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Midsomer Murders (2009)
Rickmansworth is a town which is in the Three Rivers district of Hertfordshire, 4¼ miles (7 km) west of Watford and has a London Underground station also served by National Rail. It is contained within the M25 with good transport links to Luton and Heathrow Airports.
Rickmansworth is often shortened to "Ricky" by the local neighbourhood and is often referred the town's annual "Ricky Week" celebrations.
