About Totteridge

Totteridge is North London within the Borough of Barnet and is a mixture of open land which includes some farmland and suburban developments. The postcode area is predominantly N12 rather than N20 but is often taken as being in Woodside Park.

Over time the rural quality of Totteridge attracted the well-to-do families and with the opening of the Great Northern Railway station in 1872 many Victorian and Edwardian mansions were built around the old village. Totteridge, a civil parish of Hertfordshire covered an area of 1,604 acres and just touched the edge of Middlesex. In 1894 it became part of Barnet Rural District and in 1965 it transferred from Hertfordshire to Greater London and became part of the London Borough of Barnet.

In 1901 it had a population of 844 but by 1951 this had increased to 4,500 and as at the 2001 UK census the Totteridge electoral ward stood at 14,449.

There are still standing some beautiful and historic buildings within Totteridge, such as Saint Andrew’s church which stands on the site of a chapel dating back to the year 1250 and the ancient yew tree in the churchyard is said to be between 1,000 to 2,000 years old. Dating from the 16th and 17th century is The Tithe Barn and the adjacent Pound and both of them are now part of The Pound House Estate.
