About Tower of London

The Queen’s Royal Palace and Fortress, generally referred to as Tower of London, is an historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames situated in the UK capital London. It forms part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, detached from the eastern edge of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was established towards the end of 1066 during the Norman Conquest of England. The Tower of London is readily recognised by the White Tower, the earliest Keep built by William the Conqueror in the later part of the 11th Century, from which the original castle derived its name. Being such a romantic and serene setting, this would be a fantastic location to liaise with one of our delightful and sophisticated London Escorts, for that amazing encounter that can only bring you happiness and complete satisfaction.

The complex as a whole consists of several buildings set within two concentric circles of defensive walls and a deep moat. Folklore intimates that the Tower is traditionally known today as a place of imprisonment, and was as such used to this end from as early as 1100, although that was not its primary purpose. In its foundling years, the Tower of London was a grand palace, serving as a royal residence. The castle underwent extensive redevelopment, principally under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I, culminating in its current generalised layout dating back to the 13th century. Occasionally the Tower was used as a refuge from the general populace in times of unrest. In its earlier years it was portrayed as a symbol of resentment and oppression inflicted on London by the Norman conquerors.

Steeped in historical events the Tower of London has taken a prominent role in England's chronicles. The Tower has had many uses and accounts show that it was used as a place of refuge for unpopular monarchs and at times has acted as the centre of government fir England. The Tower has been utilised as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, the Royal Mint, an official public records office, and as today has played host to the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. The absence of the monarch at the Tower passed the controlling element to the Constable of the Tower who took charge of the castle. In medieval England this position became a powerful and trusted position. From the Tudor period onwards, the Tower became used less as a royal residence, despite attempts to refortify and repair the castle, its defences lagged behind developments to deal with artillery.

The pinnacle of the castle's use as a prison came about in the 16th and 17th centuries and was infamous for detaining political or religious figures within its bastions. Many high profile captives have been held in the Tower and include; the Princes in the Tower and Elizabeth I before she became queen. More recognisable residents have been Guy Fawkes, the famed bomber of the Houses of Parliament and in more recent times Rudolf Hess the Leader of the Nazi party post his capture and the infamous Kray Twins were held at the Tower for failing to report for National Service.

The tower is also known as a place of torture and execution, although only seven people were executed within the Tower; executions more commonly took place on the notorious Tower Hill, north of the castle. Today the site is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and is protected as a World Heritage Site.
