The town of
Watford gained its first mention in an Anglo-Saxon charter in the early 11th century. However it is not mentioned by name in the Domesday Book, but was included under the entry for the more important settlement of Cashio which stood near the modern Town Hall.
The magnificent houses of Cassiobury and The Grove were built in the seventeenth centuries; they were further expanded and developed throughout the following centuries. Cassiobury became the family seat for the Earls of Essex, and The Grove the seat for the Earls of Clarendon.
Watford remained a rural agricultural community surviving with its small cottage industries for many centuries.
The Industrial Revolution gave
Watford the Grand Junction Canal, now known as the Grand Union Canal, in 1798 and the London and Birmingham Railway in 1837. The main
Watford railway station still remains outside of the town centre and is located the east at
Watford Junction. These developments afforded the town remarkable communications and stimulated industrial growth during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
