Welwyn is a village in Hertfordshire and should not be confused with the newer settlement of
Welwyn Garden City about a mile to the south. It is one of the many Villages in the area. Woolmer Green is another small village situated between
Welwyn and Knebworth. In the 16th Century
Welwyn was on a main road to the north and became a posting station where coaches changed their horses and travellers were revived with hospitality.
In 1863 there was a gunsmith and a shoemaker trading and by 1898 the population of Woolmer Green was 363 and Knebworth was 382. There there five shops. Later there was a general store and Post Office, a baker, a small supermarket and a butcher. Sadly these have all now closed
During the 20th century the village became a popular destination for tourists. Visitors visited the cottage of the late Harry McDonald, who for many years adorned both the cottage and garden with intricate carvings of animals and other objects. He became famous as the Woodcarver of Woolmer Green; sadly The Woodcarvers Cottage, as it came to be known, was demolished after his death.
A pleasant pastime in the village is feeding the ducks in the old ford which is alongside the high street and there are good local shops, pubs and restaurants which all give the village a busy, vibrant feel. An excellent restaurant which is very popular with residents is The Stable Door on the high street. The main restaurant is upstairs, with additional seating and a bar area downstairs. The good quality food makes the restaurant popular with both locals and visitors.
The centre of the village retains its old charm and includes many historical and architecturally interesting buildings. The edge of the village has allotments and large playing fields and sporting facilities, with green belt countryside beyond.

Welwyn Roman Baths and discover the secrets of the past in a steel vault deep under the A1(M) motorway, where you can find the unique remains of a once-luxurious bathing suite. The layout of the hot, warm and cold rooms and the heating system are a fine example of Roman life from the third century AD.
