The Sadler's Wells Theatre

The Sadler's Wells Theatre

Sadler's Wells theatre with its strong, dynamic contemporary programme, uniquely committed to bringing the very best International and UK dance to London audiences. The theatre which is located on Rosebery Avenue in the London Borough of Islington opened in 1998, after major refurbishment aided by a fundraising programme and supported by Lottery funding.

The Sadler's Wells Theatre is a fore-runner in new ground breaking theatre design with its tasteful, accessible front-of-house zone, versatile auditorium and purpose-built entertaining and meeting areas. But behind the elegant glass, brick, wood and steel of the newly created theatre there is over 300 years of steeped history and six previous theatre buildings which have all proudly carried the Sadler's Wells name. They have all occupied the same site since the inaugural Sadler's Wells theatre opened in 1683.

When it was agreed to rebuild the Sadler's Wells in 1996, on its historic site in Islington, the theatre company moved to the Peacock Theatre, centrally located, just off Kingsway. When the new Sadler's Wells re-opened in 1998, the Peacock remained and played an essential role in the Sadler's Wells group. Since 2003, a programme of significant refurbishment has rejuvenated the customer facing internal areas of the theatre. Work has also taken place outside; with the newly pedestrianised area the surroundings have given the Peacock a modern-day profile, fully praiseworthy of the Sadler's Wells name.
