What to See in Southgate

Keats House

Keats House

Keats House is now a museum devoted to the Romantic poet John Keats. Located in Keats Grove, Hampstead, North London and easily accessed by road, rail or public transport, the museum is worth a visit to those of you who love the works of Keats. Street Maps prior to 1915 show Keats Grove with an earlier name, John Street. The road has also been recognized as Albion Grove. The original building formed part of a pair of semi-detached houses known as "Wentworth Place".

John Keats boarded in one of the houses with his friend Charles Brown, between December 1818 and September 1820. These were reportedly Keats's most productive years of writing. According to his long term friend Charles Brown, Ode to a Nightingale was written under a plum tree in the garden of the residence.

During his time in the house, Keats fell in love with and became engaged to Fanny Brawne, who lived with her family in the adjacent house. Keats who had been diagnosed with tuberculosis became increasingly ill and was advised to move to a warmer climate. His departure from London in 1820 to Italy was unfortunately followed a year later by his death. Keats never married his beloved Fanny Brawne.

The house is a Grade I Listed building and remains intact.

London Canal Museum

The London Canal Museum allows you to look back at the history of the London canal arrangement. You can see inside a narrow boat cabin and learn about the history of London's unique canal system, the cargoes carried, the people who lived, worked and operated the waterways, and prior to the introduction of the engine, the horses that pulled their narrow boats.

As the museum is based on a site originally developed as an Ice House the visitor can enjoy peering down into the unique heritage of a huge Victorian ice well once used to store the ice imported from Scandinavia and transported initially by ship and then canal boat to be stored and sold.

The museum housed in a former ice warehouse, was built in the later part of the 19th century for the famous ice cream maker, Carlo Gatti and depicts the history of the ice trade and ice cream as well as the canals. This is the only London based museum of inland waterways and is located at King's Cross, which enables easy access to this central London location and exhibition.
