Abbots Langley village has long history of flourishing human occupancy. The first traces of habitation in the area were recorded by the now celebrated archaeologist Sir John Evans (1823 – 1908). The village rests on a clay sub-structure covered by a deposit of gravel; as a result a constant water supply has always been available to the local inhabitants. Records indicate that in former times water could be drawn from a well just 20ft deep.

In 1045 the Saxon Ethelwine The Black established the upper part of Langlai (Langley) to St Albans Abbey as Langlai Abbatis, the remaining lands being the king's Langlai. The Domesday Book of 1086 shows records that the village was inhabited by 19 families.

This area was split into four Manors, Abbots Langley, Langleybury, Chambersbury, and Hyde. The Manor of Abbots Langley was bestowed by Francis Combe in his will of 1641 to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and Trinity College, Oxford and apportioned jointly.

The manors of Langleybury and Chambersbury controlled by the Ibgrave and Child families, where in 1711 passed on to Sir Robert Raymond the then Solicitor General later to become Attorney General and Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench. The remaining family member the son, passed away and without issue the manors passed to the Filmer family in 1756. The Manor of Hyde can under the ownership of Edward Strong in 1714, who on his death, left the manor to be shared between his children and their descendents; this included one Admiral Sir George Strong Nares. The manors were then passed to and became the possession of F.M. Nares & Co who eventually in 1858, sold the estate to the British Land Company.

In more recent times the Katherine Place development has encouraged some high class retailers to the centre and was sold in late 2005 for £2.93 million. South of the village are the Leavesden Film Studios, located on the former Rolls-Royce airfield, where movies including the evergreen 007 film, Goldeneye, the Johnny Depp adaptation of Sleepy Hollow and the Harry Potter series have all been filmed. The village has had many famous people who have been part of the community, its most famous son was, Pope Adrian IV who was born Nicholas Breakspear in the village around 1100. The village has also played host to Manuel Almunia the current Arsenal Goalkeeper and during his exile from Ethiopia, the renowned Haile Selassie.

The village is located to the North of one of Hertfordshire's thriving communities and key commercial centres Watford, a popular venue for shopping, alternatively you can enjoy the entertainment scene offered by Watford's many Hotels, Hostelries and Restaurants. A great place to visit with one of our exquisite and elegant escorts.
