Harpenden is a picturesque and lively town that has good transport links which may be useful when you visit one of our
London escorts. Harpenden has an abundance of shopping areas and restaurants. There are many green open spaces and just beyond the southern edge of the town lies Nomansland Common, sometimes simply called "No Man's Land.” The large Common is popular for recreational sport and walking and there is a nature trail and picnic area where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine.
The Common used to be part of the Harpenden Dry Valley. In the last ice age a glacier dammed the river which created a lake. When the dam melted and the water drained away, it left the thin, stony soil still found on the common today. Nomansland has, throughout its history, been recognised for uniquely poor soil quality for agricultural purposes. Nomansland Common also saw the first annually contested steeplechase in 1830 and the last fight of nineteenth century bare-knuckle fighter, Simon Byrne.
It was also the place that the highwaywoman known as the "Wicked Lady” liked to ambush the stage coaches that regularly travelled to and from London. This Wicked Lady, who was better known as Lady Katherine Ferrers, was armed and dangerous. It was not uncommon for wagon drivers to ride alone across the remote and lonely Nomansland Common. These wagons and carts also provided booty of whisky and gin, or ornaments and fancy clothing. So they were fair game for robbery, but the penalty for any highwayman or highwaywoman caught was death and the orders were shoot to kill. A ghost is said to gallop on a black horse, at night, across Nomansland Common. Could Lady Katherine be riding still, or is it a piece of 19th century romantic mythmaking.
Between 1848 and 1914 the common was a regular venue for horse racing, hence the name of the local pub “Silver Cup” and golf has been played on the Common since 1894.
Today Harpenden is a busy commuter town, and retains its charm with a tree-lined High Street and many 17th and 18th century buildings. The town centre offers several small interesting shops, excellent pubs and restaurants with three central supermarkets, multiple female clothes shops, charity shops, banks, estate agents and chemists.
