Sawbridgeworth town centre is a conservation area and a lot of the buildings date from Tudor, Stuart and Georgian era. The Tudor tower contains a clock and bell tower dated 1664 and the oldest of eight ringing bells dates back to 1749. These are housed in the 13th century St Mary the Great church. It is the place where the 15th century Lord Mayor of London is buried and there are brass rubbings of his family which depict this. Inside the 1664 clock tower there is an Elizabethan alms box and built into the south wall of the tower is a puddingstone which is a pagan charm thought to ward off evil.
There is an Annual fair held on Fair Green on the Sunday of the first May Bank Holiday and Carol singing on the green on Christmas Eve.
Sawbridgeworth is a place of outstanding beauty that seems to be in the middle of nowhere yet is very much within reaching distance of all amenities. You get to enjoy the peace and quite of the countryside but can still have the option of being in a busy environment and the crime rate is low making it a very desirable place to live.
Sawbridgeworth’s claim to fame is of course the very famous Mr and Mrs Beckham who moved there. Their house Beckingham Palace is situated next door to Pishiobury Park. It is possible to view the front of the house and the gardens but, for obvious reasons and due very tight security, you cannot venture in any further.
The Beckhams have well and truly put Sawbridgeworth on the map. The film crews are often standing outside their house waiting for them to leave or enter their premises and as you may well have guessed many famous people have now visited the small town of Sawbridgeworth as this is the home where the Beckhams host their extravagant parties. I'm still waiting for my invite.
